Families received a letter from schools superintendent Lizzette Ruiz-Giovinazzi informing parents that an antisemitic symbol was discovered at Nyack High School.

Clarkstown police officials tell News 12, a teacher was straightening up her classroom at the end of the day Thursday and discovered a swastika drawn on one of the desks.

School officials immediately contacted police and alerted parents.

In the letter, the superintendent stated:

"Nyack public schools stands against all acts of hate, antisemitism and any form of bias. No member of the school community should ever feel targeted, unsafe, or unwelcome."

Parents News 12 spoke with agree that incidents such as this need to be investigated. They say students need to be taught that certain symbols and language are not only unacceptable, but also extremely hurtful to others.

"I don't agree that anyone should be writing stuff like that on a wall or anywhere,” said Benny Arroio. “It symbolizes hate."

Clarkstown police went to the school on Friday morning, spoke with administrations and took a report. They say they will continue to work with area schools on such incidents.
