MetLife Stadium veterans and Bergen County residents alike know that exit 16W is a jam getting in and out, even on days without a stadium event.
There’s a lesser-used backdoor entrance just up the road that the Turnpike Authority wants drivers to consider using to keep traffic moving.
Normally, northbound drivers get off at exit 16W for the stadium. This is also the way to get onto Route 3. Now, these drivers can head a few miles further north past exit 18W, take a Turnpike ramp soon to be opened, and enter the stadium complex at exit 19W. They'll only pay one toll, at 18W.
Only drivers with EZ-Pass can access exit 19W, but the Turnpike Authority says 93% of its tollpayers use it.
"Essentially, what we are suggesting is you now have two ways to get into the stadium," said NJ Turnpike Authority executive director Kris Kolluri. "If there's traffic backup, which there more often than not is at 16W, you now have an alternative way of getting to the stadium."
This idea was not specifically for the upcoming FIFA World Cup, but it will be the first event for drivers to try out the new method. Limited gameday parking is available at American Dream mall.
