Celebrate spring with the family with "Branches in Bloom" at Planting Fields in Oyster Bay this weekend

This family-fun festival celebrates spring and the majestic 100-year old trees at Planting Fields with a variety of unique activities for the whole family and options for train riders on Long Island and in the city.

This weekend Planting Fields Arboretum State Park honors the nearly 40-year tradition of celebrating Arbor Day with a new celebration "Branches in Bloom". This festival includes the same family fun activities generations have enjoyed with a new focus on the spectacular cherries, magnolias, and dogwoods at peak bloom around the site.

I spoke with Daid Golon, an arborist and horticulturalist with Wonderland Tree Care + Landscapes who sets up one of the most exciting activities of the festival - this kid's tree climb. The climb is recommended for children ages 5 and up and does have a height limit.

There will also be arts & crafts, food trucks, a plant sale from New York State Parks, and a tree planting along with expert guided walks around the arboretum.

Branches in Bloom takes place Saturday and Sunday, April 25 and 26 from 11 AM to 4 PM at Planting Fields in Oyster Bay.

For those planning a visit, transportation has become a central focus this year with the introduction of a shuttle program. Organizers are offering a shuttle option priced at five dollars per person. This package includes both transportation from the LIRR Oyster Bay station and admission to the festival, making it one of the most cost-effective ways to attend. Availability is restricted to a small number of participants per day, and advance registration is recommended.

The shuttle is designed as an alternative to on-site parking, which is priced per vehicle at $30 per car which also includes admission to the festival. Those visiting on Earth Day or any time over the next two weeks will find the arboretum open and beginning to show early signs of bloom.
