The Archdiocese of Newark's Mercy House is spreading holiday cheer. Volunteers distributed hundreds of Easter gift bags filled with candy and other fun items to families in need.

Recipients could also pick out free clothing and groceries available from donated supplies.

"Smiles make such a difference," said Peter Hernandez, associate director for Mercy House Logistics. "If you can make someone smile, make their day, it could change the whole way they feel about themselves. So that's what we try to do here, try to make every kid smile, every family smile, have them feel like they're wanted and they have a place that's safe. Where they can go, won't be judged and they can get what they need."

The Mercy House has locations in Essex, Hudson and Union Counties.

They regularly provide nonperishable food, clothing, baby supplies, furniture and other assistance to community members in need.
