Hundreds gathered in Yorktown Heights Saturday for a celebration of life ceremony to remember slain 18-year-old college student Sheridan Gorman, of Yorktown.

Police say the Loyola University freshman was fatally shot on March 19 by a masked gunman, steps away from her Chicago campus.

"When we heard what had happened, I just started crying," said one woman who attended the ceremony.

Kathy Ferri and her husband traveled from Cortlandt Manor to honor the memory of the teen who was loved by so many.

"For this girl, I look at pictures of her and she just, it hits your heart, it just hits your heart. That's why we came, my husband and I because we want to show support [to] the family," she said.

At the center of it all, outpourings of love and promises to always remember the Yorktown High School graduate.

"We're a small town and people think it can't happen in your town, and next thing you know, you send your kid away to college and they don't come home," said Rocky Bonitatibus, of Yorktown.

Chicago police say the gunman was 25-year-old Jose Medina-Medina, an illegal immigrant from Venezuela, who is now charged with first-degree murder and other felony charges.

Two of Sheridan's former classmates from high school also paid their final respects at the ceremony.

"I'm just showing my support honestly, because I feel bad for the family," said Lyndsey Sandoval, of Yorktown.

"I knew the person she was, she was an amazing person and it was really tragic what happened. I just came here to support the family and show that we care," added Alexandra Kostik, of Yorktown.

The Sheridan's family created a GoFundMe memorial and scholarship in her memory, which had already surpassed the $200,000 mark as of Saturday night.
