Consumer Reports has released new results from its latest round of vehicle safety testing.

A Kane In Your Corner report says researchers put cars through more than 50 evaluations to determine which automaker makes the safest vehicles.

“There are over 50 tests that every vehicle goes through,” Emily Thomas of Consumer Reports said at the end of her statement. “It takes usually a few weeks for us to put a vehicle through all of its paces.”

Mazda ranked number one in the new safety results. Thomas said the vehicles “perform well in our track testing” and also do well in crash tests from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. She said Mazda comes standard with features “that even some of their competitors make you pay for, like blind spot warning and rear cross traffic warning.”

Genesis ranked second for safety, followed by Acura. Researchers said those automakers provide strong safety features and controls designed to help drivers keep their focus on the road.“They don’t have distracting controls because every time that you take your eyes off of the road, you’re more likely to get into a crash,” Thomas said. “Or it’s gonna make your reaction times to avoid a crash slower.”

Consumer Reports said all major manufacturers meet the basic expectations of safety. “Even the vehicles that have been rated basic for the safety verdict, we’re not saying that they’re unsafe vehicles,” Thomas said. “We just know that there are other vehicles that provide you with more safety.”

Walt Kane says the results are available at no cost on the Consumer Reports website.
