Some residents in Mount Vernon say they have been living without heat or hot water for more than a month.

Trachelle Long, a tenant at 10 West 4th Street, said her family is preparing to move out because the conditions have become unbearable. She said the heat has been out since December 29.

“We’re hoping for the best, but we’re trying to move,” Long said. “No water, no heat.” She said Section 8 visited the building.

Long described how she manages daily needs. “I buy gallons of water, I heat up a big pot on the stove,” she said. “I had to take a shower at my job.”

Tenants say they have not received concrete information from the landlord on when heat and hot water will be restored.
