A Tarrytown family is without a home after an early morning fire tore through their house on Crest Drive.

Fire officials say the blaze broke out around 4 a.m., starting in an electrical socket connected to a freezer inside a converted garage. The flames quickly spread throughout the home, filling it with smoke and forcing the four occupants to flee.

Roman Kozak said his family was awakened by smoke alarms and the smell of smoke.

“Our son woke us up. The alarms were going off and the house was full of smoke,” Kozak said. “I saw flames, so I immediately had my wife call 911.”

The Tarrytown Fire Department responded quickly and was able to contain the fire, though frigid temperatures caused low hydrant pressure and made the firefighting effort more difficult.

No injuries were reported.

The American Red Cross is assisting the family with temporary housing as they begin the process of recovery and rebuilding.
