Safety upgrades are rolling out across Westchester as county officials launch a pilot program for the Bee-Line bus system.

Solar lights have been installed on top of 14 bus stop poles in six Westchester communities.

Officials said the new lighting is designed to help bus drivers see riders waiting in the dark and reduce the risk of accidents.

Westchester County Director of Surface Transportation Michael Swee said the winter weather will provide a strong test for the new equipment. "That really gives us a good test environment because with limited sunshine, with extreme cold, and snow and ice, we're going to really see how these things perform," Jenkins said. "Based on their performance, we'll move accordingly."

The lights were installed last month.
