President Donald Trump is weighing in on New Jersey’s gubernatorial race.

Democratic Rep. Mikie Sherrill defeated Republican Jack Ciattarelli to become New Jersey’s second female governor.

Trump endorsed Ciattarelli in the election. He says that he thinks the ongoing government shutdown may have something to do with Sherrill’s win.

"I thought we'd have a discussion after the press leaves about what last night represented. And what we should do about it, and also about the shutdown - how that relates to last night. I think if you read the polls, the shutdown was a big factor, negative for the Republicans,” Trump said.

Sherril’s win is the first time a political party in New Jersey has won three consecutive gubernatorial elections in decades.
