October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and individuals and businesses across the country and throughout the Hudson Valley are doing their part to find a cure.

Gjoko Shkreli, co-owner of Gjoko Salon & Spa in Larchmont, is hosting his annual fundraiser and raffle, aimed at raising money for treatment, research and education.

"We feel that anything we can do to make awareness, so someday we have a cure for this terrible disease," he said.

According to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, one in eight women in the U.S. will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. In 2025 alone, their research says, 2,800 men will be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer.

Merrill Naughton of Larchmont says such alarming statistics motivated her to get involved in the battle against the disease.

"I hope in my lifetime, that we get to a place where breast cancer will not be a woman's issue and those who've had it, it will not recur. And to get to a point where breast cancer is not in my lifetime," she said.

Proceeds from Sunday's fundraiser will be donated to the Susan G. Komen Foundation. The organization was founded in 1982 by Komen's sister in her memory. Susan G. Komen died of breast cancer in 1980 at the age of 36.
