Abrupt end to Ferris World Ball league shocks players

On Saturday, News 12 spoke with the MC and an original member of Ferris World Ball about the city's cancellation of the Ferris World Ball league and its championship game following Thursday night's shooting.
"We don't want this to end, and we've been doing it for years. So, to stop it over something like that, it hurts. We never have situations like that happen. We've been doing great for years, " said MC Marquise Potillo.
"For one incident to just crush the whole league...Its very unfortunate and I don't think its justified," said Torey Thomas, an original member of the league.
White Plains Mayor Thomas Roach and Beth Bricker, commissioner of Recreation & Parks released a statement on Friday:
“The Championship game of Ferris World Ball that is scheduled to be played at the County Center this Sunday has been cancelled. While we recognize this will disappoint many, the safety of the public is our priority. We are also announcing the discontinuation of the league moving forward. The mission of the Recreation and Parks Department is providing recreational activities for residents of the City of White Plains. The men’s basketball league over the years has grown into a regional draw outstripping the capacity of Gardella Park and the neighborhood it serves. Attempts to mitigate the impact including moving the final game to the County Center have not brought relief. Discussions on discontinuing the league were already underway, last night’s events have accelerated the process."

Three people were injured Thursday night in a shooting following a basketball tournament in White Plains.
According to White Plains Commissioner David Chong, it appears to have been a dispute between two groups of people who were returning to their cars on Church Street following the game at Gardella Park.
An 18-year-old male, 21-year-old male and 22-year-old female, all from the Bronx, sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
