The school superintendent in Mahopac has announced her retirement less than a month before the new school year begins.

Christine Tona made the emotional announcement during a school board meeting Tuesday night.

She has worked in education for over 30 years, including the last three as superintendent.

Tona said she had planned to stay through June 2027 but that "things changed."

"I encourage all of you to continue rising above challenges and keeping students at the forefront because they are and always will be the reason we are here. Thank you," Tona said.

Residents at the meeting praised her leadership and called her departure a loss for the district.

Tona will take a leave of absence starting Thursday, with her retirement effective Sept. 1.

Former athletic director Frank Miele has been named interim superintendent.
