A piece of East 9th Street in lower Manhattan now bears the name of one of Broadway's most celebrated voices.
In the presence of loved ones and Broadway stars, the corner of East Ninth Street and University Place was officially co-named Terrence McNally Way on Friday in honor of the late playwright and screenwriter, who left an indelible mark on American theater.
"He loved this neighborhood, this street so much," said husband and theater producer Tom Kirdahy.
McNally, a four-time Tony Award winner, is best known for works including "Love! Valour! Compassion!," "Kiss of the Spider Woman" and "Anastasia." He was also a trailblazer for LGBTQ+ representation in the arts.
"At a time when the arts are under attack in this country, books are being banned and LGBTQ+ rights are being eroded, honoring a fearless queer artist feels particularly meaningful," said Kirdahy.
Lin-Manuel Miranda, local officials such as City Council Member Carlina Rivera, and devoted fans of the arts filled the street. Actors Jonathan Groff, Frances Jue and Donna Murphy paid tribute with live monologues. Caissie Levy, Brandon Uranowitz and Brian Stokes Mitchell sang songs from McNally's body of work.
"Thank you, Terrence, for giving us so many signs to follow," said Mitchell.
