New York is officially on a statewide residential brush burning ban through May 14.

The state Department of Environmental Conservation says springtime is when most wildfires occur in New York.

The boroughs are currently at high fire risk.

Over the next two months, residents are urged to try to avoid any open flames outdoors.

Open burning is the single greatest cause of wildfires in the state, according to officials.

Officials say if you smoke, make sure cigarettes are disposed of properly so fires are not accidentally started.

If the burn ban is violated, you could be hit with a $500 fine.
