Tax preparer to pay $145 million in restitution for fraudulent scheme

A tax preparer from Cortlandt Manor has pleaded guilty to filing tens of thousands of false tax returns.

Rafael Alvarez, 61, who worked out of the Bronx, admitted to his crimes in Manhattan Federal Court and agreed to pay the IRS $145 million in restitution.

He will also forfeit nearly $12 million in fraudulent proceeds he received.

Alvarez is scheduled to be sentenced in April and faces penalties for his role in the fraudulent tax scheme.
