A fire near downtown Poughkeepsie has left seven people, including two children, displaced.

The fire broke out on North White Street, just a block from Main Street, around 9 a.m. today.

Poughkeepsie firefighters responded to a neighbor's report of smoke and extinguished the fire within an hour.

One person may have been home at the time, but no injuries were reported.

The American Red Cross is providing assistance to those displaced.

The cause of the fire remains unknown, but a preliminary investigation suggests it started in the attic and does not appear suspicious.
