Yonkers City Council passes ordinance to require new developments to have electric vehicle charging
City officials said this is only for projects and developments that are in construction now or are proposed in the future. This new requirement goes into effect immediately.

New developers in Yonkers must now have dedicated parking spaces for electric vehicle charging at residential and nonresidential developments.
The Yonkers City Council voted unanimously on this ordinance on Tuesday night.
The ordinance states that any new development, which includes parking garages and lots with 10 or more parking spaces, must provide spaces for electric vehicle charging for at least 5% of total parking spaces - and not less than two spaces.
City officials said this is only for projects and developments that are in construction now or are proposed in the future. This new requirement goes into effect immediately.
Officials told News 12 the need for more charging stations is growing faster than availability.
“We are aware of the climate and environmental issues and we want to promote cars transitioning from using gas to electric,” said Yonkers City Council President Lakisha Collins-Bellamy.
City officials also don’t think this new requirement will have an effect on developers wanting to build in Yonkers.
