With another week of high temperatures on the horizon, local energy companies are urging customers to conserve energy and stay safe during this latest round of extreme heat and humidity.

Both Con Edison and Orange and Rockland Utilities (O&R) have issued statements warning that the predicted high temperatures and humidity could lead to increased demand for electricity, particularly for air conditioning. This, in turn, can place stress on electric delivery equipment, potentially causing it to overheat and result in power outages.

To prevent potential outages and save money on energy bills, both companies are urging residents to follow these tips:

  • Turn down or off air conditioning when you are away from home.

  • Set your thermostat to the highest comfortable temperature.

  • Close all doors and windows while the air conditioner is running to improve cooling efficiency.

  • Use appliances during cooler periods, such as mornings and evenings.

  • Keep curtains and shades closed to block out sunlight and heat.
