The state Department of Environmental Conservation has announced changes to shark handling requirements for marine recreational anglers.
The new rules aim to prevent protected shark species from being captured and to reduce stress and injury to those that are captured. They include:
Immediately releasing all prohibited shark species once caught
Not harvesting a shark in the water with its gills submerged
Having wire or bolt cutters immediately available
Taking every precaution to ensure a released shark will be able to survive.
The DEC also released new gear restrictions, with a complete list available on its website.
