African culture celebration takes center stage in New Rochelle

African music, passion and pride were all on display at the annual Music of the African Diaspora concert Saturday night in New Rochelle.
The concert at the Generations Church on Main Street not only featured the music of Africa, but teachings on the continent's history as well.
"Culture is the one thing that allows a people to act as a collective one. It's the glue that makes us one. So, during Black History Month, it is important to celebrate all the greatness of our culture," said Elder Mark McLean.
The third annual event proudly attracted people of all ages and racial and ethnic backgrounds. Joseph Williams said he makes it a point to attend every year.
"Music is at the heart of who we are as a people and we get a chance to indulge in all types of music that flow from who we are," he said.
Books aimed at enhancing the teaching of Black History and wellness items were also offered.
"We have one story that's Cinderella. Goldilocks and the characters look like our children, so they're included, they're not excluded in the story," explained Otilia Tanner, of The Humble Bumble Book.
This year's concert also included an onstage offering of Latin music performed by a local Salsa band.
