A group of Asian American Pacific Islander organizations, advocates and elected officials called on Westchester's school districts to integrate AAPI history into their regular curriculum.

Many argue schools are not doing enough to adequately educate students about Asian American history. They worry the lack of knowledge has led to an increase in anti-Asian discrimination.

"Our children deserve to learn the rich history of Asians in America and that they deserve a seat at every table," said Marjorie Hsu, chair of the Westchester Asian American Advisory Board.

This past spring, a group of state lawmakers reintroduced a bill to expand social studies curriculum in schools to require teaching Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander history in schools including movements and policies that affected these groups.

The group also wants school districts to recognize Diwali and Eid al-Fitr alongside the Lunar New Year as official holidays starting next year.

Two months ago, Gov. Kathy Hochul signed legislation declaring the Lunar New Year a public school holiday.
