The Greenburgh Town Board unanimously passed a new law banning residents from planting new bamboo on their property.

While it might seem quirky, Town Supervisor Paul Feiner said it is a nuisance and quality of life issue.

"I started getting emails and phone calls from residents for the legislation a number of years ago and then got some more this year, and we said okay, we're going to give it a try," said Greenburgh Town Supervisor Paul Feiner.

The invasive species spreads its roots from one property to another damaging other plants, sidewalks, fences and driveways.

Those with existing bamboo plants on their property are encouraged to take steps to keep them under control or face penalties.

Residents can report violations to the town building inspector.

Bamboo owners will have 30 days to fix the issue or face fines between $100 and $1,000.
