More than a dozen people are homeless, and four firefighters are recovering from smoke inhalation after a devastating fire Tuesday that destroyed two multifamily buildings in Newburgh.

Residents watched on in disbelief while firefighters worked on what’s left of their apartments at 210 Broadway.

Sources say the two attached multifamily buildings were destroyed in the blaze and that more than 15 people were left without a home.

“They’re going to look for hotels for us to stay in and all that and get help,” said Lisy Valdez.

Some of the residents were inside the buildings when the fire started.

“It started in the first building right here,” Jose Capeles said while gesturing to the left side of the apartment buildings. “I looked at that and I said hey, I’m taking my son and I’m going outside.”

Sources say a City of Newburgh firefighter was also injured in the blaze and taken to the emergency room at St. Luke’s Hospital with smoke inhalation.

Red Cross was at the scene and is helping tenants with a place to stay. So far, there’s no word on what caused the fire.

“Now, I don’t have anything. I lost everything,” said Capeles.

City officials have not responded to News 12's request for information.
