An elementary school in Middletown is now the second school in Orange County to be treated for bedbugs this week.

Bedbugs were found at the William Carter Elementary School on Monday, the same time Monroe-Woodbury High School was being treated for the bugs.

Districts say a few classrooms and the nurse's office were treated while the the elementary school was closed for Veterans Day. Parents say they were notified by a letter on Wednesday.

At Monroe-Woodbury High School, classes are back in session after a bedbug infestation shut down the building earlier this week. A bedbug was found in an English classroom and experts then found additional affected areas in the building and a school bus.

Monroe-Woodbury Superintendent Elsie Rodriguez says a pest control company searched the entire school and treated the room where the bedbug was found, two adjacent rooms and the room directly below. The school bus was also treated, but has been taken out of service as a precaution.

Superintendent Rodriguez says they have identified the student who is believed to have brought in the bedbug, and that they are confident the child's home has been treated as well to avoid further issue.

Officials say the source of the bedbugs in Middletown is unknown.

Administrators for both schools say the buildings were treated with organic, non-toxic chemicals. They say the schools will continue to be closely monitored throughout the week.
