Police have arrested two people in the shooting of two NYPD plainclothes officers from Rockland County who were responding to a robbery.
One suspect was captured Tuesday, about 12 hours after the shooting in the Bronx. Another turned up at the hospital with a gunshot wound in his arm and doctors notified police.
Charges are pending.
Officers Andrew Dossi and Aliro Pellarano were coming off their shift Monday night when they responded to a report of a grocery store robbery. They approached suspects at a Chinese restaurant. The shooter opened fire from inside the restaurant, and police fired back. Dossi was shot in the arm and back. Pellerano was hit in the arm and chest.
The shooting came about two weeks after two officers were fatally shot while sitting in their patrol car in Brooklyn.
Mayor Bill de Blasio said the officers went "above and beyond the call to protect their fellow New Yorkers."
The shootings garnered the attention of Rockland County Executive Ed Day, a former NYPD member, who visited Dossi's father and offered his support.
"This is just one more reminder of the everyday incidents that our law enforcement folks stand up and put their lives on the line," he said.
The reminder also hit close to home for longtime neighbors of Pellerano nearby in Garnerville.
"When we found out, we were kind of in shock," said Pete Cuccinello, of Garnerville.
Officer Pellerano may be released as soon as Wednesday. Officer Dossi's father Joseph says his son may be in the hospital much longer.
