Two people remain hospitalized after a shootout near a day care center in New Rochelle.
Police say two SUVs pulled into the intersection of Clinton Avenue and Thomas Place around 1 p.m. yesterday, and people from the cars shot at each other. "Like boom, boom, they took off. The glass was shattered all over the place" says Raymond Adams, who works near the scene.
The bullets were flying just feet from the New Rochelle Day Nursery. The director told News 12 the shooting happened during the children's nap time and luckily none were hurt. Still, parents were understandably shaken. "I wasn't even done with work yet, I had to come pick him up because my wife was worried," says parent Richard Onayiga.
Authorities put out an alert for a dark SUV, and Westchester County police spotted it near McLean Avenue in Yonkers. Police say a man got out and tried to run while holding a backpack, but cops caught up to him and found a gun in the backpack.
That man is now in the hospital after hurting his leg during the chase.
According to investigators, another man checked himself into Montefiore Mount Vernon Hospital with a gunshot wound to his left shoulder and arm, claiming he was shot at the site of the New Rochelle shooting.
The shooting is still under investigation, and police say there may still be another suspect on the loose.
