A multi-billion-dollar transportation project is on the works that promises to benefit thousands of Westchester County residents.

Riders who currently travel from communities like New Rochelle, Larchmont, Mamaroneck, Mount Vernon and Rye have to travel to Manhattan's west side after arriving at Grand Central Terminal to access Penn Station. The Penn Station Access Project, however, will soon allow riders to travel directly from New Rochelle to Penn Station.

New York State Sen. Charles Schumer highlighted all the benefits at a news conference on Sunday that the more than $3 billion project will offer to people who live in Westchester, the Bronx and Connecticut.

"People can have a one access ride from the East Bronx, South Bronx, Westchester, right to Penn Station," Schumer said.

The Penn Station Access Project will receive $1.6 billion in federal funding to help pay for the construction of four new Metro-North stations in the Bronx that will extend north to Westchester County.

The Penn Station Access Project is slated for completion by 2027.
