Officials of all levels of government are taking big steps against the coronavirus pandemic.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo has implemented restrictions on different businesses and public areas, and Westchester County Executive George Latimer signed a state of emergency giving them the power to tackle this quickly.

According to Latimer, this decision comes after speaking with leaders throughout Westchester County.

Under the overarching umbrella of the state executive order, all 44 school districts in Westchester County, as well as private schools will be closed for at least two weeks.

The county is also looking at different sites, including vacant buildings and office buildings to see what uses they may have, such as areas for medical backups and housing for people who are under isolation.

The county would also like to step in to help parents who have no choice but to go to work during this time and have no means of child care for their children who are no longer in school.

Officials can't stress enough that this is not a vacation by any means or an early spring break.

"Your life is at risk. When you are 22, you believe you are indestructible and you'll live forever, and you may very well live a very long period of time, but this disease can affect a young person and under certain circumstances, can take a young person's life or they can carry the disease back home and they can impact their grandfather or their grandmother or perhaps their parents. This is a moment where the natural desire to do whatever you want to do has to be leavened by a practical reality," says Latimer.

Latimer said under the governor's direction, places like casinos, theaters, and gyms will close indefinitely at 8 p.m. Monday. Restaurants and bars will only serve takeout and delivery orders starting at 8 p.m. as well.
