Yorktown to consolidate staff in effort to save money
The town of Yorktown is expected to move ahead with a proposal to consolidate staffs from several departments in an effort to save taxpayer?s money.
The goal of a proposed new Yorktown Department of Public Works is to use town workers more efficiently. The plan would free up employees to work on projects, normally restricted to workers in other departments.
The new department would include workers from the highway, parks and recreation, conservation, sewer and water departments. Town officials say it would allow them to use workers with seasonal duties, like snowplowing, to help with something such as park maintenance. No jobs would be lost in the consolidation, but several vacancies would not be filled. Union officials say as long as no jobs are eliminated, they will probably support the plan.
Part of the proposal includes Yorktown Highway Superintendent Eric DiBartolo be appointed DPW commissioner while remaining in his current position.
A public hearing on the proposed DPW plan is scheduled for Dec. 18.
