Yorktown PD facing disbandment
The Yorktown town supervisor announced Tuesday he is considering consolidating the local police services with the county's resources in an effort to cut costs.
"I would not pursue this if I thought it would jeopardize our safety," says Town Supervisor Don Peters.
Peters says he got the idea from a similar consolidation made a decade ago in neighboring Cortlandt. He says if the plan is approved, the Yorktown police force, which includes more than 50 officers, will be absorbed into the Westchester County Police Department.
Reacting to Peters' announcement, Lt. Richard Malan, of the Yorktown Police Department, says he is willing to explore the change.
Some Yorktown residents, however, are unsettled by the idea of losing their local police force.
"Who's going to protect us?" says Joe Tomlinson. "Find another way to cut, not the police."
