Yorktown clerk appointed interim supervisor
The Yorktown Town Board has appointed town Clerk Alice Roker to finish out Supervisor Linda Cooper?s term after she announced her resignation.
Roker, a Democrat, has been town clerk in Yorktown for more than a decade. The board chose her by a 3-1 vote and she will take over as supervisor on Monday. Cooper is stepping down to become the village manager in Ossining. Her resignation takes effect midnight Sunday.
The lone dissenting vote came from Councilman Nicholas Bianco. He says it was not a vote against Roker, but rather a protest over the lack of openness by the Democratic majority on the town board. Roker says her immediate goal is to prepare a town budget for 2008. Because she will not be the person responsible for implementing the budget, she plans to work closely with the town board and whoever is elected supervisor in November.
The Democratic candidate for Yorktown supervisor is businessman Don Peters. The Republican candidate is former County GOP chair Rose Marie Panio. Roker is running unopposed for town clerk in November and says she is anxious to get back to her old job.
