The efforts of a volunteer firefighter and employees are credited with saving kids from a partial roof collapse at a Yorktown bowling alley Saturday.

Employees first heard noise and saw ceiling tiles come down on a lane at the Jefferson Valley Lanes. A Brewster firefighter aided employees with organizing the evacuation of more than 90 children and their parents. The evacuation occurred just before half of the dome-shaped roof came crashing down onto the lanes where dozens of kids had been minutes before. Fortunately everyone escaped without injury.

A piece of the roof also knocked down the rear stabilizing wall of the alley. Firefighters cut gas service and Con Edison cut power to the building that officials say is unstable. The business owners believe the weight of ice and snow from Friday?s storm caused the roof to collapse.
