Yonkers City Council members voted 4-3 Tuesday in favor of designating a soon-to-be mosque as landmark status.

The proposed site is located at 2 Grandview Blvd. in the upscale Colonial Heights neighborhood.

The Islamic Community Center of Mid-Westchester purchased the property last year for the purpose of turning it into a mosque.

Some Colonial Heights neighbors said they wanted to protect the home by giving it landmark designation. The designation would make it harder for the Muslim group to make changes to its exterior.

Members of the Islamic Community Center say they are hoping that Mayor Mike Spano will override the board's decision, but regardless of the landmark designation, the mansion will still become the first mosque in Yonkers.

Yonkers Councilman Chris Johnson said he opposed the landmark designation of the property, even though the city's Preservation Board voted unanimously last month to approve it after local homeowners submitted an application stating the property was significant to Yonkers history.
