School officials in nearby Westchester County are on high alert after an elementary school student in Yonkers was diagnosed with the potentially deadly enterovirus D68.

District officials at Cedar Place Elementary School say they learned a student at the school was diagnosed with enterovirus D68 over the weekend.

School officials say letters were sent home, the superintendent met with parents and the school's custodial staff sanitized the student's classroom and all common areas.

Parents say they are concerned, but feel the district has things under control.

The child infected is not being identified.

Enterovirus D68 has sickened hundreds of children across the country and has been linked to several deaths. It usually starts off like a common cold, with symptoms including a runny nose, fever, coughing and muscle aches.

The virus can be more problematic for children who suffer from respiratory problems such as asthma.

To keep children safe, officials advise having them wash their hands often and get flu shots. Children who are not feeling well should also be kept home.
