Residents in the Grassy Sprain neighborhood of Yonkers are fighting against plans to expand the UPS facility on Tuckahoe Road.

The group StopUPS.org, which consists of more than 2,000 residents, filed a lawsuit this week in Westchester County Supreme Court, hoping to halt the construction project. They are suing UPS, the city of Yonkers and the Yonkers Planning Board, which approved the project last August.

UPS plans to open the largest, 24-hour, seven-day a week distribution center in Westchester.

"The result will be an increase in traffic on Tuckahoe Road, as well as in our residential neighborhood. Everyone in the area will also have to live with a lot more pollution. Air pollution, noise pollution, gas fumes and a lot more," says Clare Gallagher, of Yonkers.

Perhaps the biggest concern for residents is the planned installation of two 12,009-gallon, above-ground fuel tanks.

"That will be placed just yards from our homes and even closer to a very busy crosstown road and some already overloaded intersections," says Gallagher.

A spokesperson for UPS issued a statement saying, "UPS always strives to be a good neighbor, by engaging with and giving back to the communities where we work and live, and by becoming an economic engine for further prosperity. We are reviewing the litigation and will respond accordingly."
