Officials say they are investigating the incident after glue was found smeared in two mailboxes. They say they are concerned that someone could have been fishing for mail.
The US Postal Service said it will update the mailboxes to ones with slots, making it harder for people to tamper with them. The mailboxes on Underhill Street and Grandview Boulevard were since replaced, but mailboxes on Alpine Road and Alta Vista Drive have not yet been updated.
Residents who used the affected mailboxes are being asked to check their bank and credit accounts for possible fraudulent activity.
Yonkers police are warning residents to avoid transferring money by mail and to drop off letters directly at the post office.
