Yonkers police vigilant as Latino gangs grow bolder
Yonkers police are taking a close look at Latino street gangs after recent violent confrontations throughout the city.
Police say after a birthday party on Saturday night at the Portuguese American Community Center, an 18-year-old was fatally shot and a 15-year-old was stabbed. Two hours later, police say the violence continued when a 20-year-old was slashed with a machete. Police say that attack was likely retribution for the earlier shooting of the 18-year-old. Police believe all of the violence stems from a rivalry between the Vatos Locos and Cholos 18 gangs.
Police say the gangs are becoming more visible across the county as their ?tags,? or spray-painted symbols, are displayed nearly everywhere. Police and residents are concerned that constant gang retaliation could make the neighborhood erupt in more violence.
