The Yonkers Police Department kicked off a new effort to attract recruits Tuesday, emphasizing the pay, the department's growing diversity and the sense of fulfillment officers say they've gained.
Eric Giusto says he joined the force five years ago, following in his brother's footsteps.
"I've gotten a lot from living in Yonkers, from different programs," he says. "So it felt good for me to give something back."
Officials say they want to get as many applicants as they can in order to have the force reflect the community it serves.
"Our last class of 25 recruits was 40 percent women," says Mayor Mike Spano. "That's one of the highest numbers we've seen."
Applications for the December police exam are due by Oct. 2.
