Yonkers police: Mail stolen from U.S. Postal Service box
Yonkers police are looking for the person responsible for stealing mail out of a U.S. Postal Service box.
The mail was taken from a box located on the corner of Bellevue and Roberts avenues.
Investigators say the mail being targeted has checks inside. They say the crime has been going on for more than two months, but they don't know how the suspects are getting the mail.
Officials say at least 12 people have been victims of the federal crime.
Police say the checks are being "washed," made out to other individuals and cashed.
They advise residents to use caution and be vigilant about checking bank statements. For those who are victims of check fraud, it is important to report the crime within 30 days or the bank does not have to reimburse the loss.
