Lawmakers in Yonkers are pushing for pet parents to clean up after their dogs.
Yonkers city officials consider the failure to clean up after dogs a significant quality of life issue, particularly in downtown areas, parks, and along the waterfront.
To address the problem, numerous signs throughout the city remind dog owners to pick up after their pets. It is emphasized that when taking a dog for a walk, owners should always carry waste bags, and there are even designated spots with provided waste bags for those who may forget to bring their own.
The seriousness of the matter prompted city officials to use social media as a platform to remind pet owners about their responsibility. Those caught neglecting to pick up after their dogs can face fines of up to $1,500, a penalty many residents support.
Property owners are not exempt from this initiative. Last month, code enforcement issued 34 tickets to property owners, imposing fines of $100 each. The message is clear: everyone must clean up after their dogs to maintain a cleaner and more pleasant environment in Yonkers.
