For the first time in 40 years, Yonkers is opening a new firehouse.
A ribbon-cutting ceremony cheered on the historic milestone in Yonkers. The Station 1 firehouse is the first to be built in the city since 1980.
The 88-year-old historic station on School Street was closed down in 2015 because of structural issues, making it dangerous to both firefighters and the public.
The new $15 million project opened another chapter for the firefighters at Tower Ladder 71 and Rescue 1.
It's a firehouse that remembers the fallen - with five historic church bells that once rang at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church.
"The old St. Andrew's Church and we know that it went up in flames, it was torn down, but the bells stayed on,” says Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano.
Some of the stones from the previous station that was torn down in 2015 were repurposed to make some of the elements in Station 1, reflecting the city's commitment and pride.
