Yonkers actor Lillo Brancato Junior took the stand Monday at his murder trial for his alleged involvement in the death of a police officer.
Brancato, who is charged with murder and burglary, testified about what happened in December 2005 when off-duty NYPD Officer Daniel Enchautegui was shot and killed.
Brancato faces a second-degree murder charge in the killing of Enchautegui. Brancato's co-defendant, Steven Armento, was convicted of first-degree murder Oct. 30 and was later sentenced to life in prison without parole.
Investigators say Brancato and Armento were trying to break into a Bronx apartment to steal drugs when Enchautegui, who lived next door, caught them in the act. The 32-year-old actor began his testimony by describing his struggles with drug addiction. Brancato says he began using marijuana while working on the set of the 1993 film "A Bronx Tale" and later began using cocaine and heroin.Brancato told the jury he had no idea Armento had a gun the night Enchautegui was killed.
The prosecution is trying to prove that Brancato was just as reckless as Armento the night Enchautegui was shot. In the meantime, the defense says Brancato is a drug addict - not a killer. Under state law, Brancato cannot be convicted of murder unless the jury believes he was burglarizing the apartment.Allegeddrug dealer testifies at Brancato trialWitness:Brancato was addicted to drugs in 2005Clericalmix-up puts Brancato trial on holdDoctortestifies in Lillo Brancato Jr. trial
