Yonkers mayoral candidates face off in debate
There were some tough words exchanged between Yonkers Mayor Phil Amicone and challenger Dennis Robertson Tuesday when they faced off for a debate.
The two men answered questions submitted by Yonkers business owners. Incumbent Republican Mayor Amicone asked Yonkers voters to think about their city when they vote next month. Amicone says the city is in much better shape than it was before he took office four years ago.
Democratic challenger Robertson asked the crowd to instead vote for change. Robertson, a city council member, attacked Amicone for lacking a clear plan. He pointed out the day laborers who still gather along Yonkers Avenue, despite years of talking about a hiring site. Amicone countered saying that they have explored numerous sites, but always face opposition. He says the city is working on a solution. However, when it comes to taxes and spending, Amicone continues to point to new development as a way for Yonkers to cut costs. Robertson wants developers to pay their fair share and not be given tax deals. In the end, Robertson says the city needs an overhaul, while Amicone says the city is on the right track.
