A Yonkers man is asking for the public's help to fulfill his wife's wishes to be buried in their homeland.
Teresa Zavala, 45, suffered a brain aneurysm Jan. 14 after weeks of headaches. The mother of eight, including one adopted child, was taken to Westchester Medical Center, where she remained on life support until Wednesday.
Zavala's husband, Mario Diaz, donated his wife's heart and other vital organs to people in need. He's now seeking help to fly his wife's body back to Honduras.
Through a translator, Diaz said it would mean the world to him to have his soul mate's final resting place be where her life began. He also said he hopes to be buried by her side someday.
County Legislator Jose Alvarado has come to Diaz's aid, setting up donation boxes around the county. Diaz now has about half of the money needed.
"This woman that gave birth to seven children continues to give life even after death," Alvarado said of Zavala's organ donations.
Zavala's family hopes to hold a wake by the end of the week and fly the body to Honduras after.
The couple moved to the United States in 2002. They were expecting the birth of their first grandchild.
