Despite a long-running feud over funding, Yonkers firefighters are loaning one of their ladder trucks to help the troubled Mount Vernon Fire Department combat blazes.
Noah Lighty, the commissioner of the Mount Vernon Fire Department, says lack of funding has resulted in a shortage of fire trucks. The department presently has only one working fire truck after two others recently failed an annual inspection.
Lighty says he's working on getting more funding for the department, which has an $11 million budget, 143 firefighters and four firehouses in a very busy city.
Yonkers Fire Department Commissioner Tony Pagano says lending out the fire truck was the right thing to do.
"I know it's tough times. I know people all have budget problems," he says. "But public safety comes first."
