Increased national unemployment from Hurricane Gustav and tension from the latest meltdown on Wall Street did little to deter jobseekers who turned out for a job fair in Yonkers Thursday.
Unemployment claims rose to 455,000 nationwide last week, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. However, job losses stemming from the recent events on Wall Street have yet to be counted.
About 10 employers were present at the fair at Riverfront Library. Yonkers resident Mario Reda, looking for a job in finance, says he remains hopeful despite the headlines.
?I think you can never be negative,? Reda says. ?You always have to be positive. There's always some job out there. You have to find them.?
Yonkers Councilwoman Pat McDow, who organized the job fair, says she hopes redevelopment in Yonkers could be a silver lining to the news coming out of Wall Street.
