Officials say a tentative deal is in place to have all Yonkers firefighters forfeit one day of pay to save the jobs of six coworkers.
Patrick Brady, the president of the local firefighters union, says members of his group must first approve the deal.
"We worked it out so we saved the city money and we helped out by doing an extra day throughout the course of the next six months," Brady says.
Brady says the tentative $575,000 agreement would also prevent six lieutenants with the Yonkers Fire Department from being demoted.
The deal reached with Mayor Phil Amicone would require that the free day be worked within a six-month period. The money saved is expected to equal the salaries Amicone cut out of the budget to help fill a $16 million deficit.
The Yonkers police union says it will not consider any similar agreement to give up pay to save jobs. Instead, they hope to rehire 11 police officers recently laid off when older veteran officers retire in February.
