The union president of the Yonkers Federation of Teachers is warning schools that adjustments need to be made before school starts this fall.
Samantha Rosado-Ciriello, along with the union, has released a four-phased proposal of their own requiring training for teachers and the school staff before students return to in-person classes.
All three union presidents issued a press release after Gov. Andrew Cuomo's announcement, saying that the district needs to install HVAC units to ensure proper ventilation. They also say that classrooms with no windows should not be used.
While Rosado-Ciriello says she supports hybrid learning as a temporary solution, it's the district that decides how and when schools will reopen.
Yonkers Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Edwin M. Quezada told News 12 last Friday that the district's priority has been to reopen schools, saying the majority of families indicated they want their kids back in school.
Some parents and teachers say they hope in-person learning is postponed, but for now, they have three weeks to prepare.
A virtual town hall is scheduled for Monday with Councilman John Rubbo on opening schools and the steps Yonkers Public School District is taking to protect children.
