A budget plan for Yonkers public schools is now in the hands of the Board of Education.

Interim Superintendent Edwin Quezada presented the $579 million plan to the trustees and the public during a meeting Wednesday night.

If passed, the budget would add 117 new positions - including teachers, guidance counselors and psychologists. It would also go toward music, arts and sports programs.

The district even wants to add a new elementary school by leasing the former St. Bartholomew School on Saw Mill River Road. They also want to add a new high school within an existing building for students learning English as a second language.

Those extra projects would cost the district $24 million. A district spokesperson says they have to wait and see how much state and city aid can fill the gap.
